The Howler

First Day of School More Exciting With Something New

Hunter Esquivel, Staff Writer

August 14, 2017 was the seniors last first day of school. In an attempt to rework the structure of the first day of school, ASB decided to shake things up and make the day more exciting for students. The day started just like any other first day of school. All students, with the exception of Link Crew, reported to their first period classes. Each grade level received a different colored wristband that gave them access to the day’s activities. The wristbands correlated with the grades’ class color: seniors green, juniors pink, sophomore purple, and freshmen white. Then, all the seniors headed out to the Husky Stadium, where fun, enticing games awaited them. Seniors had their pick of hula-hoops, a rock-climbing wall, airbrush tattoos, and a picture wall. After an hour of fun, seniors went inside to listen to an invigorating talk given by a Canadian inspirational speaker, Justin Bradeau. He captured audience’s attention by giving them valuable advice, such as seizing any opportunity preserved to you. Then, seniors split into groups and attended the last assembly of their high school career. Then, they returned to their first period class to make introductions and receive their schedules. Across campus, Senior Link Crew students experienced a different day. For the first hour of the day, they prepared for the arrival freshmen. Once the freshmen arrived, Link Crew conducted an orientation and took them on a tour of the school. Link Crew Leaders Hunter Esquivel and Stephanie Sanchez found it to be an overall beneficial experience for freshmen. For the seniors, the first day was a bit strange. It lacked the excitement of getting to meet their new teachers, seeing friends, and discovering who were in their new classes; however, it was a less stressful, and an exciting approach to a day that some students dread.
