In unfortunate news Texas was hit with one of the most powerful hurricanes in history, known as hurricane Harvey. The hurricane was classified as a category 4, one of the biggest hurricanes in American history. The making of the hurricane dates back to a tropical wave that came from the African coast in the beginning of August. The last time Texas received a hurricane even close to Harvey was hurricane Carla in September of 1961. Harvey brought a maximum of about 132 miles per hour winds along with a maximum of 51.88 inches of rain. Unfortunately, the power of this hurricane left plenty of cities and communities devastated and wrecked. Harvey forced more than 30,000 citizens to evacuate their homes and flee to hurricane shelters. The hurricane also broke a record for the most costly natural disaster in United States history of about $190 billion. Fundraisers and donations for hurricane Harvey were quickly created to help the rebuilding process of the cities of Texas. The American Red Cross raised plenty of money for the cause and spent about $50 million in the first few days after the hurricane to aid citizens with shelters, food, water, and much more. Many other organizations and people started fundraisers to aid in the relief of hurricane Harvey. The destruction left by Harvey is massive, and the rebuilding of many Texas cities will take lots of time. Hurricane Harvey’s presence and destruction will never be forgotten as one of the most powerful hurricanes in American history.
