The Howler

Cutting Ties as Seniors

Hunter Esquivel, Staff Writer

Throughout our lives, we are destined to encounter many different kinds of people. Humans are social, and we can’t help but develop relationships with each other. As my senior year progresses, I am noticing that my friends and I are finding ourselves making difficult choices about whom we want to keep in our lives. I have learned the hard way that some people are not meant to stay in our lives forever, and that’s okay. It’s okay to outgrow people; people change, and it’s fine to let them go if they don’t fit in your life anymore. What is particularly difficult, though, is deciding when someone who was once close to you is simply not good for you anymore. These people are often the hardest to let go, and I believe that toxic people come into our lives to teach us a lesson and make us stronger. We frequently get caught up reminiscing on the good times with these people that we ignore how toxic the relationship really is. They might have been good for us at one time, but the truth of the matter is that they aren’t anymore. Letting go of these toxic people is excruciating, but we can’t allow others to hinder our growth. As my friends and I are learning, senior year is when you learn who your real friends are. I’ve discovered how important it is to surround yourself with people who only want the best for you and are interested in seeing you grow and mature.
