On Wednesday, October 18, Chino Hills High had its annual ShakeOut earthquake drill. At exactly 8:50 AM, during 2nd period, the alarm rang through every class telling the students to duck under their desk for cover. Afterward, all of the students followed the normal evacuation process by walking out onto the blacktop and standing on the number that corresponds to whichever class number they were in when the drill started. All the teachers and students had to wait on the blacktop until they got the all-clear signal at around 9:20 AM. The ShakeOut is the world’s largest earthquake drill. Earthquake drills are necessary for all schools, especially given where we live in Southern California. The school is responsible for the students while they are here, so they need to make sure we are safe and prepared for every situation. If a big earthquake happened while we were at school and were not prepared, then the consequences could be gigantic. The school is required to run drills like the shake out, but it’s still a very effective use of our time. They have to hold them every year for any new students and for anyone who had forgotten about the previous year’s drill.
