At one point I had talked about one of my favorite games of all time, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. At that time I made a point to describe the genre the game created known as Metroidvania, where you as a player explore a semi-open world that opens up to you more as you progress. I personally love the genre and desired more of it. Enter Hollow Knight, a Metroidvania game themed around an underground kingdom inhabited entirely by insects. While that idea may sound appalling at first, the game is amazing in almost every regard. To touch upon the repulsive thought of creepy crawlers, our first point of interest is the artistic style and character design. Instead of attempting to portray the game and its bugs in a realistic way. The game opts for a more cartoonish approach. This allows for the player to enjoy fighting enemies and exploring without having to face the potential fear of bugs. I personally at many moments found myself finding many of the creatures I encountered to be extremely endearing and adorable in their own right; especially the player character with his cute little horns and eyes, his stubby limbs, and simple sword (or nail as they are called in the world). The love I feel for these bugs is only heightened by the world they live in, Hollownest. As you explore Hollownest you continue to find more and more unique environments that prove to be stunning; containing interesting yet slightly vague backstories that get the player caring and wanting to learn more about the world they continue to explore. All these areas contain boss fights that can range from fun and engaging in absolutely challenging and brutal, making defeating these foes so satisfying. The fights and exploration are accompanied by a beautiful orchestra that works to either inspire the player, create a sense of calm or sorrow, or make the player feel absolute dread when you encounter that totally evil or tragic boss. After the game’s initial release on the 24th of February 2017, the game was given free dlc updates that added new content such as playable areas and new bosses and characters. The development team behind Hollow Knight-Team Cherry-to this day prove to be highly capable and awe-inspiring developers. This year on the 19th of February, they released a trailer for a sequel to the game known as Hollow Knight: Silksong. The sequel stars a side character from the original game known as Hornet as the main protagonist. The game offers an entirely new kingdom to explore with new enemies and secrets. Not much is known about the sequel other than that, and a release date is to be announced. No matter when it releases, we can say with confidence that the Hallow Knight series is one of a kind experience that deserves its high critical acclaim.
