Knives Out: A Spoiler-Free Movie Review

KNIVES OUT - a mystery movie with an unexpected twist.

To celebrate the beginning of a new year and a new decade, I went to go watch the critically acclaimed movie Knives Out with a group of my friends. The movie was met with positive reviews and currently has a score of 8.1/10 on IMDb. Needless to say, my friends and I were quite excited to go see this movie at our local theatre.

The movie has quite an all-star cast, with many stellar actors and actresses. Some of these actors and actresses include Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Katherine Langford. The protagonist of this film, a young nurse named Marta Cabrera is played by Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas.

Knives Out is a murder-mystery film. The murder is of famous and wealthy crime novelist Harlan Thrombey, and the mystery is who killed him? While the police are convinced Harlan’s death is a suicide, private investigator Detective Blanc is doubtful. We watch the lives of Harlan’s wild and dysfunctional family members, and Blanc sees how their motives for possibly murdering the author make them suspects.

Blanc recruits Harlan’s nurse, Marta, to help him solve this difficult case. Blanc trusts Marta because of her good heart, her inability to lie, and her knowledge about the people in Harlan’s inner circle. We follow the two along their journey to bring justice to Harlan’s untimely death. This movie is filled with many plot twists and turns, as the most unexpected things come true.

Personally, I really enjoyed this movie! It was quite fascinating, and nearly everything about this movie was perfect. The dialogue was sharp and funny. The cinematography was great. The actors and actresses all gave rather stellar performances. These are just some of the factors that made the movie so much fun to watch.

I thought, especially that actress Ana de Armas did a fantastic job as the lead role. She was quite convincing, making the character, Marta seems more believable, likable, and relatable. Daniel Craig was great playing Detective Blanc, being quite an entertaining character, especially with his little quirks and strange accent. Chris Evans also did a spectacular job playing Ransom Drysdale, the black sheep of the Thrombley family and Harlan’s nephew. This character was quite different in personality than other roles the actor has played in the past, so this was quite interesting to see.

Knives Out is one of those movies that will be “ruined” if it is spoiled for you. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the movie anymore with the spoilers, though it will be less fun and exciting since you already know the result of the plot twist. However, I would say that the plot twist genuinely surprised me and that I didn’t see it coming. It is a plot twist that makes sense in the film and actually ties up the ending rather nicely.

In the end, I think I’d rate this movie 8.5/10 stars. While not everything about this movie was 100% perfect, it was pretty close to hitting that mark. I would honestly recommend everybody to watch this movie. So, if you ever find yourself free on a Friday night and want to go watch a movie, please go check out Knives Out!
