On January 26, 2020, we lost the life of a basketball legend and icon- Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash, flying to his daughter Gianna’s basketball game. All 9 people aboard the helicopter were killed when it suddenly crashed after maneuvering through the fog. Kobe Bryant was a 5 time NBA champion, 2-time finals MVP, 1 time MVP, and was an all-star for a whopping 18 selections. Kobe was considered one of the greatest players of the game, as he scored the 4th most points in NBA history and a stunning twenty-six 50 point games. To many, Kobe Bryant was an idol, as NBA players such as Kyrie Irving and Giannis Antetenkoumpo said they looked up to him and worked out with him to help craft their game. In addition to this tragic loss, we also lost Gianna Bryant, Kobe’s 13-year-old daughter. Gianna was trying to change the women’s basketball landscape and hoped that she could bring the same fame to the WNBA that the NBA had with her father. Kobe and his daughter were laid to rest in a cemetery, with a private funeral. They were honored in a public ceremony at Staples Center on February 24, 2020. To many, including myself, Kobe Bryant was the reason we fell in love with the game of basketball and the impact he had in the sports world is undeniable.
